Trailing Arm Bushing: Service and Repair

1.

Replace support arm assembly as follows:
a. Perform steps 1 through 3 as described under ``Rear Axle Assembly, Replace,'' then remove spring and rubber seats and shock absorber.
b. Reverse step 1a to install.

Replace front support arm bushings as follows:
a. Remove support arm, then the bracket at front of support arm.
b. Note position of bushings, Fig. 4, then position spacer 5348 between bushings.
c. Using drift 5347, handle 1801, counterhold 5346 and a hydraulic press, remove one bushing at a time.
d. Press in bushings from each side using drift, handle, counterhold and a hydraulic press. Ensure bushings are orientated correctly.
e. Install bracket at front of support arm, then the support arm.

Replace rear support arm bushings as follows:
a. Remove brake caliper and hang from spring with wire.
b. Remove brake disc and brake pads, then disconnect handbrake cable at wheel bearing housing.
c. Remove bolt and nut securing lower support arm and bolt securing track rod to wheel bearing housing, then use a small puller and a 12 mm x

50 mm bolt to disconnect track rod from housing.

d. Remove hub nut and nut securing upper support arm to wheel bearing housing, then the hub assembly. Retain spacers between upper

support arm and wheel bearing housing.

e. Mount wheel bearing housing in a vise, remove brake shield mounting bolts, then chisel off bushing edges to provide a seat for counterhold.
f.

Remove bushing using 1.632-1.675 inch (41.45-42.55 mm) diameter sleeve, counterhold 5343 and a hydraulic press.

g. Install bushing using drift 5342, counterhold 2731 and a hydraulic press. Bushing must be positioned with slot at top, Fig. 5.
h. Install brake shield, hub assembly on half shaft, hub nut, spacers between upper control arm and wheel bearing housing, then the nut at top of

upper control arm and tighten to specifications while pulling outward on top of wheel bearing housing.

Pull wheel bearing housing outward and insert lower control arm, install a new lower control arm bolt and tighten to specifications while
pulling inward toward differential.

j.

Connect handbrake cable to wheel bearing housing, then install brake pads, brake disc, brake caliper and track rod.
