Sealing ring/viscous coupling, replacing

Preparatory work

Removing the drive shaft/viscous coupling

Remove the drive shaft/viscous coupling. See Drive shaft right, replacing See: Axle Shaft Assembly/Service and Repair/Drive Shaft Right, Replacing.

Checking the sealing ring

There are 2 types of sealing rings:

-

outer diameter 42 mm (early version)

-

outer diameter 47 mm (late version).

Installation

Preparations for installing the sealing ring

Position the viscous coupling in a vise with soft jaws.
 
Sealing ring 42mm (early version)

Cut away a piece of the sealing ring lip.
Use a heavy screwdriver with a broad tip.
Tap the screwdriver in to make a notch in the metal holder for the sealing ring. Then press hard and pry the seal out.
