Throttle Position Sensor: Description and Operation
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR
The Throttle Position (TP) Sensor supplies the Engine Control Module (ECM) with a signal describing the angle of the throttle opening. The engine
control module (ECM) uses this information in its computations when the engine is loaded, for example during acceleration, and when it is idling.
The throttle position (TP) sensor consists of the following components:
^ Hub and wiper contacts (1)
^ Contact track (2)
^ Rheostat (3)
The hub and wiper contacts are rotated by the throttle spindle, varying the sensor output signal. The engine control module (ECM) delivers a 5 V
supply to the contact track. The output signal varies between 0.5 V at the Closed-Throttle Position (CTP) and 4.3 V at Wide-Open Throttle (WOT).
The engine control module (ECM) will adopt substitute values if the throttle position (TP) sensor signal is missing or faulty.
The throttle position (TP) sensor is mounted on the Throttle Body (TB).
