Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection
Checking Fluid
NOTE: Cleanliness is extremely important when working on automatic transmissions, particularly when checking, topping up and changing the
fluid. Clean around the filler tube and drain plug. Use clean containers. Ensure that the workplace is free of dust and dirt.
Check fluid by taking sample on dipstick. Dipstick is accessible from engine compartment using long handle with 1/2" drive inserted in top. Turn
dipstick through quarter turn to release latching spring and remove.

If fluid is discolored or gives off burnt odor:
Check if DLC reports DTC
Smell oil if DTC 2-3-5 is displayed.
Carry out troubleshooting for DTC 2-3-5.
Change fluid.

If fluid contains water (as indicated by whitish color):
Determine reason for presence of water.
Replace transmission and oil cooler and flush out oil pipes.
Checking Fluid Level
Conditions

Park car on level surface with engine idling and gear selector in position P.

Select each gear position in turn, remaining in each for 4-5 seconds

Return the lever to position P and wait approx. 2 minutes before checking the fluid level.
NOTE: Wipe the dipstick with a nylon or chamois cloth. Do not use a cloth which may leave fluff or threads.
Low Level
NOTE: Level varies with fluid temperature! Temperature can be checked using Volvo ST in test mode 5.

Top up fluid with quantity depending on temperature (see temperature chart). Grade of fluid: ATF fluid that complies with the specifications for
Dexron II E and Ford Mercon or Dexron III and Ford Mercon.
High Level
CAUTION: Fluid may be extremely hot if car has recently been driven.
