Power Steering Line/Hose: Service and Repair

CORRECTING NOISE FROM COOLING LOOP

NOTE:  The fluid cooling loop can cause noise due to pressure pulses in the power steering system. The noise can be eliminated by replacing the banjo
fitting on the steering gear with a new, softer, return line 720 mm (28.35 inch) in length and a new banjo fitting. The hose should be installed as a loop
between the steering gear banjo fitting and cooling loop and be secured by a tie strap as described below.

1. Replacement of return line and banjo fitting:

a. Clamp the return line using hose pliers between the cooling loop and the power steering fluid reservoir.
b. Raise the car.
c. Remove splash guard under engine.
d. Position a container under the steering gear.
e. Remove the return line from the steering gear (lower arrow in illustration) and the cooling loop.

2. Installation of new return line:

a. Take out the banjo fitting, P/N 3530775-0.
b. Take out the 720 mm (28.35 inch) long return line, P/N 980477-4.
c. Install the line on the banjo fitting using clamp, P/N 943470-5.
d. Install the return line and banjo fitting with the banjo fitting screw and 2 new aluminum washers on the steering gear, see arrow in illustration.

Use new aluminum washers! (P/N 9157596-9).

e. Tighten return pipe pipe screws in the steering gear to 50 Nm (36.9 ft. lbs.).

NOTE:  Use new aluminum washers! Torque tightening to 50 Nm (36.9 ft. lbs.) covers only return pipe pipe screws!

f.

Remove the cooling loop from the clip by the horn and the screw by the anti-roll bar mounting.

g. Locate the hose in a loop as shown along the front side member and connect using clamp, P/N 9433705, on the cooling loop.
h. Reinstall the cooling loop.

Wipe off any fluid spillage.
