Steering Gear: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
WARNING: Take The Recommended Precautions When Working With Cars Equipped With The SRS System.
CAUTION:

Ensure that the front wheels are positioned straight forward.

Lock the steering wheel with the steering wheel lock before slackening off tie rod and steering shaft joint.

This must be done to prevent the SRS-system contact reel reaching end position.
1. Raise the car
2. Removing splash guard and jacking plate.

Remove splash guard from beneath engine.

Remove the jacking plate from the front axle beam.

Remove loosen the control arm screws a few turns.
3. Remove the other screws for the reinforcing plates.

Remove a screw from each reinforcement panel so that the panels can be folded down as displayed in the illustration.

The steering gear is now accessible.

The tie rod length should be measured.
-
This is to ensure an accurate steering gear installation in the car.
4. Measure tie rod length.

Measure on one side the tie rod length in relation to the steering gear housing as shown in illustration.
