SERVICE
INFORMATION: Refer to Service Manual 603.01.168, pp. 1-60 and 1-61.
NOTE:
Do not engage the starter with the timing belt removed, as the pistons will contact the valves.
Align crankshaft pulley at TDC using the belt cover as a guide. Align index mark on back of cam sprocket with pointer on timing belt
shield. Install the belt and release the tensioner.
Adjustment of clearance between camshaft lobes and tappets should be performed on a cold engine.
Valve tappet clearance specifications:
Intake:
.40 mm (.016 in.)
Exhaust:
.50 mm (.020 in.)
PROCEDURE: Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the shim and camshaft lobe. Compare the clearance to specifications; if out of
spec, remove and measure" thickness of shim with a micrometer. Using existing shim and clearance, determine replacement shim
thickness needed to obtain correct valve clearance.
TOOLS
REQUIRED:
A.60421 - Tappet depressing tool A.87001 - Pliers, tappet plate removal Metric feeler gauge - .05 to 1.00 mm Metric micrometer
- 0 to 5 mm.
