Alternator: Testing and Inspection
1.
Check resistance of rotor winding by connecting ohmmeter leads to two slip rings. Resistance should be 3-3.75 ohms.
2.
Check rotor windings for short circuits by connecting ohmmeter test leads between a slip ring and the rotor.
3.
Connect leads between stator commutator and ground. There should be no current flow.
4.
Inspect stator winding live wires for short circuits as follows:
a. Connect ohmmeter leads between each winding live wire end on energizing and power diode plate and the stator winding core.
b. Connect ohmmeter leads to stator live wire ends in three possible combinations.
c. If resistance is near zero in one of the three measurements in 4a or 4b and much higher in the other two measurements, an open exists in a
stator winding live wire.
5.
Connect test leads between live wire ends and ground. There should be no current flow.
