Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Testing and Inspection
The PCV system is used to prevent blowby gases from entering the atmosphere. When the engine is started, the spring-loaded plunger in the PCV
valve lifts in proportion to manifold vacuum, allowing blowby gases to be routed directly to the intake manifold, where they are reburned.
Testing
1.
Check all crankcase ventilation hoses and connections for leaks or clogging. Repair as necessary.
2.
On Legend models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove breather chamber cover and connect suitable vacuum pump and hose to PCV valve.
b. Pinch hose with pliers, then apply 16-20 inches Hg vacuum to hose and release pliers. A clicking noise should be evident as pliers are
released. If clicking is not evident, replace PCV valve and retest.
3.
On Integra models, pinch hose to PCV valve with engine idling. Quickly release pliers and listen for clicking noise. If clicking is not evident,
inspect PCV valve grommet for cracks or damage and replace as necessary. If grommet is OK, replace PCV valve and retest.
