Alternator FR Signal: Description and Operation
A/T Shift Position Signal

The switch is fitted at the base on the gear selector lever, its internal connections are switched to either open or closed circuit depending on the selector
lever position.  The shift position switch has four functions.

1.

To ensure that the starter motor will only operate in positions P or N (interlock control). 

2.

To switch on the back-up lights when R is selected.

3.

To inform the fuel ECU when a drive position is selected so that idle speed can be increased.

4.

Informs the shift position display panel which indicator lamp to illuminate
