Alternator: Service and Repair

    To remove the alternator, it is necessary to first remove the left driveshaft.

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove left front wheel.

2.

Raise locking tab on spindle nut, then remove spindle nut.

3.

Remove strut fork nut and strut pinch bolt, then fork.

4.

Remove lower ball joint castle nut, then separate lower arm from knuckle.

5.

Pull knuckle outward, then remove the driveshaft outboard joint from knuckle using a plastic hammer.

6.

Remove driveshaft by prying between driveshaft assembly and intermediate shaft with screwdriver. Do not pull on the driveshaft, as constant
velocity (CV) joint may come apart.

7.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

8.

Disconnect alternator electrical connectors.

9.

Loosen alternator adjusting nut, then remove alternator belt from pulley.

10.

Remove lower alternator through bolt, then alternator mounting bracket.

11.

Remove alternator adjusting nut and bolt.

12.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Replace driveshaft set ring.
b. Torque alternator mounting bracket to 33 ft. lbs.
c. Torque adjusting nut to 17 ft. lbs.
d. Torque terminal nut to 5.79 ft. lbs.
e. Torque front suspension to specifications found in front suspension section of this chapter.
