Evaporative Emission Control Canister: Description and Operation

Evaporative Control Canister

PURPOSE

An Evaporative emissions (EVAP) control canister is used for the temporary storage of fuel vapor until the fuel vapor can be purged from the
EVAP control canister into the engine and burned.

OPERATION

During certain conditions, vacuum is applied to the canister to draw the fuel vapor into the intake manifold for combustion.

CONSTRUCTION

The EVAP control canister contains activated charcoal, which attracts hydrocarbon (HC) vapors. The bottom of the canister is vented to the
atmosphere.
