Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Overhaul
On models equipped with air bag restraint system, use extreme care when working around steering column or center console area to avoid
serious personal injury. All electrical harnesses for this system are covered with a yellow outer insulation, with related components located in
the steering column, center console, dash panel and front fenders. It is recommended that only authorized personnel work on vehicles with this
type of restraint system.
Before disassembling the steering gear, clean gear thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the unit. During disassembly, carefully note and
label disassembled component (part) from the main gear unit to aid in the assemble process.

CONTROL UNIT
Disassembly
Installation position of components as they are removed, and keep all components in order to ensure proper assembly.

If control unit is being removed with steering gear in vehicle, drain power steering fluid, remove steering gear shield, clean dirt from control unit
and fluid lines, then disconnect fluid lines and plug lines and open fittings.

Remove control unit retaining bolts, control unit, port orifices and O-rings, Fig. 3.
