Spark Plug: Testing and Inspection

Spark Plug Inspection

1.

Inspect the spark plugs for:

^

Improper gap

^

Carbon deposits

^

Cracked center electrode insulator

^

Burned or worn electrodes (may be caused by):

^ Excessive mileage
^ Lean fuel mixture
^ Advanced ignition timing
^ Loose spark plug
^ Plug heat range too high
^ Insufficient Cooling

^

Fouled plug (may be caused by):

^ Rich fuel mixture
^ Retarded ignition timing
^ Oil in combustion chamber
^ Incorrect spark plug gap
^ Plug heat range too high
^ Excessive idling/low speed running
^ Clogged air cleaner element
^ Deteriorated ignition coil

If the electrode is contaminated with accumulated objects or dirt, clean the electrode using the plug cleaner.

CAUTION:The plug cleaner should be used with the air pressure of less than 85 PSI and for less than 20 seconds.

Make sure that the 0.051 in. (1.3 mm) plug gauge does not fit into the gap of the platinum tip plug. If the gauge fits into the gap, do not attempt to
adjust. Replace the plug with a new one.

Electrode Gap:

0.039 - 0.043 in. (1.00 - 1.10 mm)

Replace the plug at the specified interval, or if the center electrode is rounded.

NOTE:Do not use spark plugs other than those listed below, because these plugs are a new type (ISO standard).
