Oil Level Switch Replacement (Supersedes 87-027, dated October 26, 1987)
PROBLEM
The information center displays the "CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL" message when oil level is only 1/2 quart low.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the oil level switch.
1.
Warm up the engine, then drain the engine oil.
WARNING:
A warmed-up engine and the oil in it are hot; be careful not to burn yourself.
2.
Remove the oil pan.
3.
Remove and replace the existing oil level switch.
Torque:
12 N-m (1.2 kg-m, 9 ft.lbs.)
4.
Remove and replace the oil filter, according to the instructions that come with the filter
5.
Reinstall the oil pan, using a new pan gasket.
Torque:
14 N-m (1.4 kg-m, 10 ft.lbs.)
6.
Reinstall the drain plug, using a new washer, and refill with the recommended oil.
Torque:
45 N-m (4.5 kg-m, 33 ft.lbs.)
NOTE:
Reset the oil/filter change interval on the information display according to the following instructions:

Push the SYSTEM CHECK button two times for the "CHANGE OIL/FILTER in (x) MILES" display.

Push and hold the SERVICE RESET button (behind the SYSTEM CHECK door) until the steady tone stops (about three seconds).
