Secure the timing belt to both cam pulleys using plastic wire ties. This helps to keep the timing belt in place while you replace the auto-tensioner.

Remove the timing belt auto-tensioner.

Find out if the water pump safety recall has been done by looking for a punch mark above the second character of the engine compartment VIN
checking the VIN against your campaign responsibility report, or doing an iN VIN status inquiry.

If the water pump safety recall has been done, go to step 8.

If the water pump safety recall has NOT been done, go to step 5.
5.
Inspect the casting die number on the water pump housing.

If the casting die number is "9," go to step 6.
^
If the casting die number is any number other than "9," go to step 8.
NOTE:
Some new water pumps also have a "9" casting die number. Before you replace the water pump, check the engine compartment VIN; a punch
mark above the second character means the water pump has already been replaced.
6.
Remove the wire ties, and then drain the cooling system. Refer to section 10 of the appropriate service manual.
7.
Replace the water pump and the timing belt. Refer to section 6 and section 10 of the appropriate service manual.
