Checking

1.

Remove all carbon deposits from valve guide.

2.

Position dial indicator as shown in Fig. 4 to check suspected guide.

3.

Insert new valve into valve guide. End of valve stem must be flush with valve guide end.

4.

Rock valve back and forth against dial indicator.

5.

Maximum for intake valves is .039 inch. Maximum for exhaust valves is .051 inch. Replace guide(s) if reading is beyond limit.

Replacement

1.

Worn valve guides can be removed using rod 10-206, or equivalent.

2.

Press worn guides out from combustion chamber side of cylinder head.

3.

Coat new guides with engine oil, then press into cold cylinder head from camshaft side.

4.

Press guides in as far as they will go. Once valve guide shoulder is seated, do not use more than one ton of pressure, or guide shoulder may break.
Ream guides by hand using tool 10-215 or equivalent and a proper cutting lubricant.

5.

Machine valve seats.
