Cold Start Injector: Testing and Inspection
Engines With Two Knock Sensors

CHECKING USING OUTPUT CHECK MODE OF SELF DIAGNOSTICS

1.

Perform self diagnostic output check, call up output code 4443.

Cold start valve should cycle on and off for not more than 10 seconds when full throttle switch is closed. An audible "clicking" should be
heard from valve. If so, control functions for this device are operating properly, and it is not necessary to test any further except to check for
fuel leaking from spray nozzle. If valve does not click, continue with test.

2.

Disconnect cold start valve electrical connector and connect LED test light between harness connector terminals, then repeat output check (step 1).

LED should flash on and off for approx. 10 seconds (if connected with proper polarity) when full throttle switch is closed. If LED did flash in
step 2, but no "clicking" was heard from cold start valve in step 1, replace valve.

 
If LED did NOT flash in step 2, check for:

a.

Open circuit between cold start valve connector terminal #2 (Blu/Blk wire) and fuse relay panel.

b.

Open or grounded circuit between cold start valve connector terminal #1 (Blu/R wire) and ECU terminal #1.

 
If no wiring problems are found and LED still does not flash, ECU is faulty.
 
CHECKING NORMAL COLD START OPERATION

1.

With the engine cold (coolant temperature below approx. 20~C/68~F), disable ignition coil by disconnecting electrical connector from power
output stage. If engine is already warm, remove coolant temperature sensor and immerse sensor tip in ice water until sensor is sufficiently cooled,
or disconnect sensor and bridge terminals of sensor harness connector with a 1/4 watt 5K ohm resistor to simulate approx. 0~C/32~F.

2.

Remove cold start valve from intake manifold, leaving fuel hose and electrical connector attached, and place valve in suitable container to catch
fuel.
