Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Testing and Inspection
Engines With One Knock Sensor

 
It is not necessary to test the idle stabilizer valve unless the idle speed is incorrect. If idle speed is incorrect, before testing idle stabilizer valve make sure
there are no vacuum leaks or crankcase leaks where engine vapors and air can be exchanged. Also check the ignition distributor basic adjustment.
 

Connecting Ammeter To Idle Stabilizer Valve

1.

Disconnect idle stabilizer valve and connect Audi electrical adapter #1315A/2 and ammeter (or connect jumper wire and ammeter as shown in
sketch) between valve and its harness connector. Set meter to milliamp scale 1000 mA range.

Turn ignition "on", and observe current through idle stabilizer valve.

Current should be 525-575mA.

If meter shows approx. 430mA with ignition "on" and engine not running, check for:

a. Open circuit between ignition coil terminal #1 and idle stabilizer control unit (in fuse relay panel) terminal 17/1.

If meter shows no current, check for:

a. Open or grounded circuit between idle stabilizer valve terminals #1 (G/Blk wire) and #3 (Blu wire) and idle stabilizer control unit terminals

11/ST2 and 4/ST2 respectively.

b. Internal open circuit in idle stabilizer valve. Check resistance through valve. Should be continuous with 3-8 ohms resistance.

Start engine and idle. Note idle stabilizer current.

Current should now be approx. 410-450mA and idle speed should be 750-850 rpm.

Switch ammeter to 2 amp. range and increase engine speed to approx. 2,000 rpm and hold steady. Note idle stabilizer current.

5.

Turn A/C on, idle stabilizer current should increase abruptly by approx. 80mA. If not, check for open circuit between A/C compressor clutch and
idle stabilizer control unit. If A/C signal is OK, and current through idle stabilizer valve does not increase when A/C is turned on, replace idle
stabilizer control unit.
