One of two different styles of ignition coils are used (see diagrams). Though they look different on the outside, they both work on the same principles.
The main difference between them is the use of a multi-layer laminated core (rather than the usual soft iron core) and the number of secondary windings.
The newer style (the square looking one) contains the larger ratio of secondary to primary windings and can produce significantly higher sparking
voltages.
