Battery test current (specification)

Batteries installed in imported VW vehicles are marked with Ah (20h) and CCA (cold crank Amps) ratings according to DIN battery test specifications.

Batteries installed in domestically produced VW vehicles are marked with Ah (20h) and CCA (cold crank Amps) ratings according to SAE and DIN
specifications.

Replacement batteries must fulfill the same specification as the O.E.M. battery. An incorrect (insufficient) CCA rating could impair cold startability of
certain vehicles, and with an incorrect Ah (20h rating), short distance driveability may be impaired.

Note

SAE cold cranking Amps specifications cannot be directly converted to DIN specifications. SAE specifications will appear numerically higher than their
DIN counter-pan.

After-market batteries are marked only with SAE specifications. When replacing an OEM battery in an imported VW vehicle, refer to the following chart
to ensure proper replacement.
If the battery voltage drops below the Minimum voltage with a load period of 15 seconds the battery is either discharged or defective. Check the state of
charge according to the repair manual.

To test battery condition, apply the current load for 15 seconds, then measure the voltage with the applied load of the V.A.T. 40*.

Note

The minimum current to apply and the minimum voltage to be measured will vary depending on which CCA rating is being used. Refer to the chart.

CAUTION

Do NOT test batteries that are gassing, there is danger of explosion.
