Timing Belt: Adjustments
Adjust valve timing whenever drive belt is removed or replaced. If timing belt requires removal, do not rotate crankshaft with belt removed.
Fig. 2 Setting distributor to adjust valve timing.
1.
Rotate crankshaft until No . 1 cylinder is positioned at TDC. This is accomplished by aligning pointer on crankcase alignment tab with ``O'' mark
on flywheel assembly. Both intake and exhaust valves for No. 1 cylinder should be in the closed position.
2.
Rotate intermediate shaft until distributor rotor points to mark on distributor housing as shown in Fig. 2.
3.
Ensure all marks are correctly aligned, then carefully tighten distributor attaching bolts. After tightening attaching bolts, ensure crankshaft and
intermediate shaft are still correctly aligned.
4.
Turn camshaft until mark is in line with upper edge of rear drive belt cover.
Vehicles use hydraulic valve lifters.
1.
Run engine until coolant temperature is approximately 95°F.
2.
Disconnect accelerator linkage.
3.
Remove upper drive belt cover and the cylinder head cover.
4.
Turn crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise until cam lobes of cylinder to be adjusted point up.
5.
Using a suitable feeler gauge measure valve clearances.
6.
On engines with hydraulic valve lifters, clearance should be .006-.010 inch for intake valve or .014-.018 inch for exhaust valve. A noisy hydraulic
valve lifter will indicate excessive clearance, replace valve lifter(s) as required.
