Before replacing heat damaged A/C compressor clutches, perform the following:
-
discharge A/C refrigerant system
-
check expansion tube for cleanliness and blockages
-
evacuate and recharge refrigerant system
^
1100 g (38 oz) refrigerant R-12
-
run vehicle with A/C ON
-
measure voltage and amperage at electrical connector of A/C compressor clutch
-
record findings on repair order
Note
First stage radiator cooling fan must run when A/C is switched ON. Second stage radiator cooling fan runs when refrigerant system pressure reaches 229
psi (15.8 bar) and returns to first stage when pressure drops to 191 psi (13.2 bar).
-
check operation of second stage radiator cooling fan
-
record findings on repair order
-
replace compressor clutch
If A/C system will not operate with old compressor clutch, perform the following:
-
discharge A/C refrigerant system
-
check expansion tube for cleanliness and blockages
-
replace A/C compressor clutch
-
evacuate and recharge A/C refrigerant system
WARNING
Always wear safety goggles when charging or discharging system.
Be sure work area is well ventilated. R-12 is heavier than air and can accumulate in areas of poor air circulation.
Avoid inhaling fumes when using flame type leak detector. R-12 becomes poisonous gas after coming into contact with open flame.
Note
Transfer all recorded data to the warranty tag with submitted clutch.
