Shift Linkage: Adjustments

4 SPEED 5000 MODELS

1.

Place shift lever in neutral.

2.

Adjust selector shaft lever on transmission so that distance from rear of selector shaft knob to front of transmission case is 4.095 inches.

3.

Adjust selector lever flush with selector shaft, then tighten clamp bolt.

4.

Adjust length of adjusting rod so that distance between center point of end holes is 59/32 inches.

5.

Push front shift rod on to selector lever ball and install adjusting rod.

6.

Ensure that seam of plastic stop bracket on shift lever aligns with center hole of left stop pad with shift lever at 1st/2nd gear gate in neutral
position.

7.

Loosen four bolts, align holes of stop plate and bearing support, and tighten bolts.

8.

Loosen clamp between front and rear shift rods, then ensure that rear shift rod moves freely.

9.

Using tool 2073 or equivalent, install tool by inserting pins of tools into open holes on left stop pad, then lock shift lever.

10.

Ensure that front shift rod is in neutral position, adjusting as necessary, then tighten clamp.

11.

Remove tool.

12.

Engage 1st gear, push shift lever to left side to stop, and release shift lever.

13.

If shift lever does not move to right 1/4 to 3/8 inch, adjust by moving slightly sideways in slots.

14.

Shift through all gears, ensuring that gears engage easily without jamming.

15.

Install shift lever knob and boot, ensuring that boot contacts shift knob.

5 SPEED 5000 MODELS

1.

Place transmission in neutral and loosen four bolts.

2.

Align holes of stop plate and bearing support, then tighten bolts.

3.

Loosen clamp between front and rear rods and ensure rear shift rod moves freely.

4.

Install tool 3048 or equivalent and tighten clamp nut, then remove tool.

5.

Engage 1st gear and press gearshift lever to left stop.

6.

Release gearshift lever and ensure lever springs back to right.

7.

Engage 5th gear and press gearshift lever to right stop.

8.

Release gearshift lever and ensure lever springs back to left.

9.

If lever does not spring back approximately same distance in steps 12 and 15, move gearshift lever housing slightly sideways in slot.

10.

Ensure all gears engage easily without jamming, especially reverse gear.

11.

On later models, adjust projecting portion of bearing pin to 11/16 inch.

12.

Readjust stop plate mounting as necessary.

13.

Install gearshift lever boot and knob, ensuring boot contacts shift knob.
