Diesel MFI Pump: Adjustments
Injection Pump and Valve Timing

1.

Remove vacuum pump pulley and drive belt.

2.

Remove injection pump drive belt cover and cylinder head valve cover.

3.

Rotate engine until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC. Do not rotate engine opposite normal direction of rotation (counterclockwise) using crankshaft
center bolt, as torque setting may be disturbed allowing sprocket to loosen. Insert locking pin 2064 into the injection pump sprocket

Remove injection pump drive sprocket and drive belt from vehicle. Ensure that the engine is still at TDC No. 1, adjusting if necessary.

Insert camshaft alignment tool (No. 2065A or equivalent) into the the slot on the back of the camshaft. If the tool cannot be inserted into the
camshaft, adjust as follows:

a. Rotate crankshaft so the tool will fit into the slot on the back of the camshaft.
b. Remove camshaft drive belt cover and loosen the camshaft sprocket 1 turn, tap the sprocket using a drift punch (as close to the center as

possible) until it pops loose from the camshaft, then tighten the camshaft bolt until there is no freeplay but the sprocket still turns freely on the
shaft. 

c. Rotate the crankshaft until the TDC mark aligns with the pointer. Tighten the camshaft bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and remove tool 2065A.

Install camshaft drive belt cover.

Install injection pump drive belt and sprocket. Tighten the drive sprocket to the point that it can be turned by hand, but there is no free play in the
sprocket and insert tool No. 2064.

Install tension gauge VW 210 or equivalent, on belt between camshaft and injection pump, Fig. 2.

Adjust tension until gauge reads 12-13, then torque tensioner locknut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

Ensure the timing marks are aligned, adjusting if necessary.

10.

Torque the injection pump drive sprocket to 72 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) and remove the locking pin from the injection pump sprocket.

11.

Check injection timing, adjusting if necessary. Install drive belt and cylinder head covers.

12.

Install vacuum pump pulley and drive belt.

13.

Warm engine to normal operating temperature. 

14.

Rotate the idle speed control knob located on the dash panel counter clockwise to its stop.

15.

Using suitable equipment, check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 700 and 800 RPM (720 and 780 RPM for turbo). Adjust the
idle speed if necessary. Tighten the lock screw and seal it with a suitable substance, such as paint.
