Subject:
Pulsation in Brake Pedal and/or Shimmy in Steering Wheel When Brakes are Applied
Model(s):
All
Condition:
Brake pedal pulsation when braking, steering wheel shimmy when braking may be influenced by the following factors.
^
Suspension components (ball joints, bushings, tie rods, etc.)
^
Brake rotor/hub run-out / Brake rotor thickness variation
Service:
Check suspension components (control arm bushings, front struts, ball joints, tie rods, etc.) for wear.
If components check OK and rotor/hub runout is found:
Resurface rotors using the RTI BRC4O on-the-vehicle brake lathe.
Note:
RTI BRC40 on-the-vehicle brake lathe is available from Equipment Solutions.
Brake rotors, resurfacing with on-the-vehicle brake lathe
-
Remove front wheels.
-
Measure rotor thickness (must be of sufficient thickness to allow resurfacing without going below minimum specification set in Repair
Manual).
-
Mark (index) hub & rotor with a center punch.
-
Remove brake calipers (Remove/installing calipers, see Front brakes servicing in the appropriate Repair Manual).
-
Remove rotor and clean hub to rotor mounting surfaces, reinstall rotor (line up index marks).
-
Clean brake caliper mounting points.
Note:
Illustration is used for reference to procedure only Actual suspension view may differ from what is shown.
-
Install on-the-vehicle brake lathe.
-
Resurface rotor.
