Canister Purge Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
Fig. 17 Terminal Designations
Self Constructed Led Test Light
Note: This is one test in a series that should be performed in a specific sequence. See "Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems
/Testing and Inspection/Procedures" in "COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS" for complete description of test procedure.
1.
With ignition OFF, insert fuse in top of the fuel pump relay.
2.
Switch ignition ON and remove fuse after 4 seconds (DO NOT SWITCH IGNITION OFF).
3.
Re-insert the fuse in the fuel pump relay for four seconds, then remove.
4.
Fault code indicator light should display fault 4343.
5.
Close the full throttle switch and listen or feel the shut off solenoid. The shut off solenoid should actuate with the throttle switch.
6.
If not, unplug the harness connector from the solenoid and connect LED tester US 1115 (or Fig. 14) between the two terminals.
a. If the LED tester lights up, replace the carbon canister shut off solenoid.
b. If not, check for voltage between terminal 1 of the harness plug, Fig. 17, and ground. Battery voltage should be available.
7.
If voltage is not available;
a. Reconnect the harness to the shut off solenoid.
b. Disconnect the plug from the injection control unit.
c. Check the resistance between terminals 2 (-) and 15 (+) to the solenoid. Resistance should be no more than 0.2 ohms.
8.
If resistance is too high, repair wiring as necessary.
9.
If resistance is OK, replace the injection control unit.
