Radio/Stereo: Description and Operation

Circuit Description

Power for the radio is supplied via a 7.5 amp fuse located at the back of the radio chassis. The radio drives six speakers: two in the front and four in the
rear. The left rear speakers are connected to a left low frequency unit and likewise for the right side. On 80/90 models, the rear speakers can be
switched off to allow use of headphones plugged into the headphone jack.

On some models, the station frequency, stereo indicator, number of the preset station button or the word TAPE will be displayed at the Auto-Check
system display if the radio is switched on and no malfunctions are indicated.

The 80/90 models are equipped with a dual window antenna system. The front antenna, in the windshield, is for FM signals only. The front 
amplifier is located on the right front "A" pillar. The rear antenna, in the rear window, is for both AM and FM signals. The FM portion is comprised of
the rear window heating elements. Two wire leads at the top of the window comprise the AM antenna and are not heated. The rear amplifier is
located on the left rear "D" pillar

Anti-theft coding electronically prevents the radio from operating whenever:

-

the coded radio is removed

-

the coded radio is disconnected from its power supply

-

the battery cable is disconnected

-

the radio fuse fails

If any of the above occurs, the word "SAFE" will appear after the radio is switched on. The radio will work only after the correct code is entered.

WARNING:  Always separate the airbag power supply connector before using a computer memory saver. Failure to do so may result in activation of the
airbag. Refer to "Air Bag Systems" for more information.
