Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection
Fig. 13 Ignition Coil, Version II
1.
Disconnect the harness plug from the ignition coil power stage.
2.
Remove the high tension wire from the coil.
3.
Check resistance between terminals 1 and 4 of the coil.
^
Resistance should be 5K - 9K ohms.
4.
Check resistance between terminals 1 and 15 of the coil.
^
Resistance should be 0.5 - 1.5 ohms.
If either resistance value is not within specification, replace the ignition coil with its' power stage.
If both resistances are OK, visually inspect coil for cracks, loose terminals, or arcing to metal body from high voltage terminal. If any of these conditions
exist, replace coil.
If coil passes inspection and resistance values are within specification, coil is OK. Perform IGNITION SYSTEM QUICK CHECK in this section. If
there is still no spark, check ignition signal and power output stage (refer to COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS and see IGNITION SIGNAL
- POWER OUTPUT STAGE under TESTING PROCEDURES).
