Ball Joint: Service and Repair

1.

Loosen lug nuts, raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels.

2.

Remove nut from ball joint, then press ball joint out from joint carrier.

3.

Loosen control arm mounting bolts at subframe, then swing control arm downward.

4.

Remove bolts from wheel bearing housing, then insert two M8 X 40 mm bolts into wheel bearing housing to a depth of .98 inch (25 mm).

5.

Push preassembled tool 40-204A or equivalent, over ball joint, attach joint mounting nut with large washer onto joint, then tighten as far as
possible.

6.

Alternately, turn out installed bolts to remove ball joint.

7.

Before driving in new ball joint, align holes in joint to holes in wheel bearing housing.

8.

Drive ball joint into wheel bearing housing until seated.

9.

Tighten ball joint bolts to specification.

10.

Swivel control arm into place, then tighten ball joint nut to specification.

11.

Tighten control arm mountings with vehicle on wheels.
