Drive/Propeller Shaft: Adjustments
Fig. 7 Propeller Shaft Alignment Tool. Quattro Models
Propeller shaft work must be performed with vehicle on a suitable dual support hoist.
Models equipped with an airbag system have a front propeller shaft section made of carbon fiber. This propeller shaft has variations in
diameter which make installation and adjustment procedures different from that of previous propeller shafts.
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove catalytic converter and exhaust pipe.
2.
Tie exhaust system over to right side with wire, then loosen propeller shaft bolts at transmission, differential and center support.
3.
On models less airbag system, install alignment tool 3139 or equivalent on driveshaft and tighten plastic nuts, Fig. 7.
4.
On models with airbag system, propeller shaft must be spaced away from propeller shaft alignment tool 3139. Choose one of following two
methods to accomplish required spacing.

5.
Square tubing spacer, method 1, is as follows:
a. Fabricate a spacer from 1-11/32 inch square steel tubing as shown in
Fig. 8.
b. Insert fabricated spacer in rear V-block of driveshaft alignment tool (end opposite arrow embossed on tool),
Fig. 9, spacer will raise alignment
surface .452 inch (11.5 mm).
c. Mount alignment tool to propeller shaft, tool must be installed with embossed arrow facing rear of vehicle.
