t  Heed the safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Heed the disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
  Note
t  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- lights following an accident, use a → vehicle diagnostic tester to check whether crash data have been stored. If this is the case, check whether an entry has been made in the event recorder for the battery isolation igniter -N253- (Fault »Resistance too high«). If so, the battery isolation igniter -N253- must be replaced.
t  Each time the airbag is triggered, the battery isolation igniter -N253- electrically isolates the circuit. The battery isolation igniter -N253- must always be replaced after triggering.
–  With the ignition switched on, disconnect the battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.

–  Remove the luggage compartment floor covering.
–  Take out the vehicle tool kit mount.

  WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example to unplug the connector), the person concerned must „discharge static“, for instance by briefly grasping hold of the door striker plate.
–  Unscrew the nuts -2, 3-.
–  Detach the battery isolation igniter -4-.

t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example to plug in the connector), the person concerned must „discharge static“, for instance by briefly grasping hold of the door striker plate.
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
  Note
Make sure the connectors are pressed on as far as they will go and are heard to engage.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (airbag, belt tensioner for example) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
–  With the ignition switched on, connect the battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  As a final step, interrogate the event recorder of the airbag control unit -J234- and deal with any faults → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
Notes on installation: For example tightening torques, component replacement → Chapter.
