Checking Climatronic control unit -J255- and air recirculation flap control motor -V113-
  Note
Depending on the operating unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the air recirculation flap control motor -V113- on vehicles manufactured in 2010 may also be displayed as fresh air/recirculated air, air flow flap control motor -V425- or fresh air and air recirculation flap control motor -V154- → Vehicle diagnostic tester, „Guided fault-finding“ function.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle diagnostic tester
t  Voltage tester -V.A.G 1527 B-
   
Sequence of operations
–  Remove the glove compartment → Rep. gr.68.
–  Switch on the ignition.
–  Check operation of the control motor by way of „Read measured values“ in the „Guided fault-finding“ function → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Set the rotary air distribution switch -5- to „Dash panel vents“.
–  Fresh air/air recirculation button -4- not pressed.
l  Fresh air mode - the lamp in the button does not light.

l  Air recirculation flap control motor -V113- set to „Fresh air mode“ - fresh air flap -1- in „Open“ position.
l  Air recirculation flap closed.

This illustration shows the fresh air flap -1- with the plenum chamber cover removed.

–  At the control motor -A- use the voltage tester -V.A.G 1527 B- and test leads from the adapter set -V.A.G 1594C- to connect contacts „5“ and „6“ of the connector -B-.
  Note
t  Leave the connector plugged in.
t  Operation of the control motor is displayed in „Read measured values“ in the „Guided fault-finding“ function → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
t  This illustration shows the connector on a manually controlled air conditioner control motor. Use is made of additional contacts in the connector on vehicles with an automatically controlled air conditioner → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
t  The control motor connections are interchanged on right-hand drive vehicles → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.

–  Press the fresh air/air recirculation button -4-.
l  The lamp in the button lights.
l  „Earth“ is briefly applied to contact „5“ and „Positive“ is briefly applied to contact „6“.

–  The air recirculation flap control motor -V113- and thus the air recirculation flap -1- move to the „air recirculation mode“ position.
l  The air recirculation mode opening is opened.
  Note
Positive is only applied for a certain time after pressing the fresh-air/air recirculation button. Once this time has elapsed, the control motor is then only actuated with a specific duty cycle (lamp in voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B- only flashes briefly).

–  Press the fresh air/air recirculation button -4-.
l  The lamp in the button goes out.
  Note
On pressing the fresh air/air recirculation button, the control unit alters the power supply to the control motor (positive and earth are interchanged).
l  „Earth“ is briefly applied to contact „6“ and „Positive“ is briefly applied to contact „5“.

–  The air recirculation flap control motor -V113- and thus the air recirculation flap -1- move to the „fresh-air mode“ position.
l  The air recirculation mode opening is closed.
  Note
The control motor connections are interchanged on right-hand drive vehicles → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
If this test does not reveal any problems with actuation of the air recirculation flap control motor -V113- and the flap does not move properly:
–  Check the freedom of movement of the fresh-air/air recirculation flap.
–  Replace -V113- → Chapter.
If actuation and thus operation of the air recirculation flap control motor -V113- are not OK
–  Check the electronics in the Climatronic control unit -J255- and actuation of the air recirculation flap control motor -V113- in the „Guided fault-finding“ function → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Check the wiring between the Climatronic control unit -J255- and -V113- for open circuit or short circuit → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
–  Check the power supply and earth connection to -J255-.
–  Replace the Climatronic control unit -J255- → Chapter.
If operation of the fresh-air/air recirculation flap is OK and the windows mist up, check the following:
–  Contamination of dust and pollen filter → Chapter.
–  Forced air extraction from passenger compartment → Chapter.
–  Ingress of water into passenger compartment → Chapter.
–  Fresh-air intake from plenum chamber and plenum chamber water drain → Chapter.
–  Seals between individual fresh-air intake components and vehicle for damage and leaks.
–  Actuation of air conditioner compressor regulating valve -N280- and operation of air conditioner → Chapter (checking cooling output).
