Renewing oil seal for flange shaft (left-side)

t  Multi-purpose tool -VW 771-

t  Puller hook -VW 771/37-

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

t  Thrust piece -T10082- t  Sealing grease -G 052 128 A1- Procedure l  Gearbox in vehicle

–  Remove noise insulation -1- → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. –  Remove front left wheel. –  Remove wheel housing liner (front left) → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. –  Turn steering to the left. –  Unbolt drive shaft from gearbox flange.

–  Remove nuts -arrows- securing swivel joint (left-side). –  Swivel wheel bearing housing (left-side) outwards. At the same time, pull out drive shaft (left-side) between subframe and gearbox. –  Swivel drive shaft (left-side) into wheel housing and secure to suspension strut with cord or similar. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.

–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox. –  Remove flange shaft securing bolt. To do this, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever. –  Pull out flange shaft together with spring, thrust washer and tapered ring.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using multi-purpose tool -VW 771- and puller hook -VW 771/37-.

–  Lightly oil outer circumference of new oil seal. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.

–  Drive in new oil seal onto stop (take care to keep oil seal straight). The remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Push flange shaft in against spring pressure and secure with bolt. –  Bolt swivel joint (left-side) to suspension link and drive shaft to flange shaft → Rep. gr.40.. –  Check gearbox oil level in manual gearbox. If necessary, top up to bottom lip of filler hole → Chapter. –  Install wheel housing liner (front left) and noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. –  Install wheel and tighten wheel bolts → Rep. gr.44. Tightening torque → Chapter
