Interchanging left and right backrest > < Connecting airbag adapter VAS 5094
Removing and installing front seat backrest
   
Removing and installing front seat backrest
  WARNING
Observe relevant safety precautions on models fitted with side airbags.
1 - Backrest frame
q   Remove seat → Chapter.
q   Remove seat side trim -5- → Chapter.
q   Remove backrest adjuster -12- → Chapter.
q   Disconnect airbag cable -7- from seat pan → Chapter.
q   Detach heated backrest cable -2- from seat pan.
q   Vehicles with no seat height adjuster:
q   Unscrew bolts -10- (6x) of seat pan → Chapter.
q   Detach holders -9- with bearing shells.
q   Fold up seat pan -8- at front.
q   Vehicles with seat height adjuster:
q   Move seat height adjuster to lowest position.
q   All models:
q   Remove fitting trim -13- → Chapter.
q   Disconnect airbag cable -7- from holder -3- → Chapter.
q   Unscrew bolts -11- (4x).
q   Detach backrest -1-.
2 - Seat heater cable
3 - Holder for seat side trim
4 - Rivets
5 - Seat side trim
6 - Bolts (2x)
q   Tightening torque 24 Nm
q   To unscrew, heat bolt head for approx. 5 min. with hot air blower -V.A.G 1416/- set to 150° C. Use metal panel to protect cover.
q   Slacken off bolt, applying max. 35 Nm with torque wrench.
q   If bolt -6- cannot be slackened off, drill into bolt -6- with 5 mm bit and slacken off by drilling anti-clockwise.
7 - Side airbag cable
8 - Seat pan
9 - Holder
10 - Bolts (6x)
11 - Bolts (4x)
q   Tightening torque 50 Nm
q   Screw in bolts -11- at front (round holes) and then at rear (elongated holes).
12 - Handwheel
  Note
Replace handwheel if it is too loose following assembly.
13 - Fitting trim
14 - Bolt
q   Tightening torque 2 Nm
