Removing
Removing
–  Cover the driver’s and passenger’s seats with protective covers.
–  Switch on the ignition.
–  In vehicles with electrically adjustable seats, move them back as far as possible before disconnecting the battery -A-.
–  Pay attention to the code in vehicles with a coded radio. If necessary, find out the code.
–  Switch off the ignition.
–  Disconnect the earth strap on the battery -A- with the ignition switched off.
–  Remove the fresh-air intake duct in the engine compartment for the heater → Chapter
–  Open the sealing cap of the coolant expansion tank.
   
–  Mark the positions of the coolant hoses -A- and -B-.
–  Pinch off the coolant hoses to the heat exchanger using hose clamps up to Ø 25 mm -VAS 3094- and detach these hoses.

–  Attach a piece of hose onto the connection -B- and place a container underneath the other end of this hose.
–  Use a compressed air pistol to carefully blow the coolant out of the heat exchanger through connection -A- (into the container).
–  Remove the hexagon nuts -C- and remove the bracket -D-.
–  Remove the glove box, the driver's storage compartment, the centre console and the dash panel: → General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair group 70; Dash panel
  Note
So as not to damage the dash panel fascia, the dash panel may only be placed on a clean workbench covered, for example, with clean cardboard.

–  Remove the bolts -A- and -B-.
–  Remove the bracket -C-.
–  Remove the gearshift mechanism. → Relevant Workshop Manual, Gearbox

–  Remove the bolts -B- and the dash panel supports -A- completely → General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair group 70; Dash panel
–  Detach the additional heater earth strap on the right “A” pillar (only for vehicles with a TDI engine and an electric additional heater). → Electrical System; Repair group 01

–  Remove the throttle mechanism -C-. → Relevant Workshop Manual, Fuel Supply
–  Unplug the connector -A- or detach the positive connection to the heating element for additional heater -Z35- (only for vehicles with a TDI engine and an electric additional heater) → Chapter.
–  Detach the vehicle wiring harness mounting -B- (with cable tie) on the heater.

–  Loosen the cable duct -B- by pressing the catches -C- at the two fastening points -A- of the heater together.
–  Remove the intermediate piece for the defroster vent → Chapter

–  Remove the right dash panel support -A-. → General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair group 70; Dash panel
–  Unplug all the electrical connections between the vehicle and the heater.

–  Unscrew the bolts -A-.

–  Remove the heater -A- towards passenger's side.
