Installing > < Removing and installing the heating element for additional heater Z35

Removing
–  Switch on the ignition.
–  In vehicles with electrically adjustable seats, move them back as far as possible before disconnecting the battery -A-.
–  Pay attention to the code in vehicles with a coded radio. If necessary, find out the code.
–  Switch off the ignition.
–  Disconnect the battery -A- earth strap with the ignition switched off or interrupt the voltage supply to the heating element for additional heater -Z35- (only for vehicles with a 1500 Watt additional heater). → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  Remove the driver's storage compartment and the glove box: → General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair group 68
–  Remove the centre console and the gearshift mechanism → General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair group 68 and the → relevant workshop manual on gearboxes
   
–  Remove the bolts -B- and the dash panel supports -A- completely → General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair group 70; Dash panel
–  Loosen the earth connection for the auxiliary air heating element -Z35- on the right “A” pillar. → Electrical System; Repair group 01

–  Unplug the connector -A- (in the case of an heating element for additional heater -Z35- with an output of 900 watt).
–  Remove the bolt -C- (in the case of an heating element for additional heater -Z35- with an output of 900 watt).
–  Remove the rear heating duct (not fitted on all vehicles).

–  Remove the clips -A-.

–  Detach the positive connection -A- to the heating element for additional heater -Z35- by removing the hexagon nuts -B- (tightening torque of 9 Nm) and insulate the positive connection that has been removed (in the case of an heating element for additional heater -Z35- with an output of 1500).

–  Remove the bottom part of the air duct housing -B- (with the heating element for additional heater -Z35-) in the direction of the arrow.
–  Unlock and remove the additional heater electronics connector (in the case of an heating element for additional heater -Z35- with an output of 1500 watt).
–  Remove the heating element for additional heater -A- from the bottom part of the air duct housing -B-

t  Leave the heat exchanger -C- installed.
t  Up to model year 2002, only heater elements for additional heater with a nominal output of 900 Watt were installed. From 2003, vehicles have also been built with a heating element for additional heater -Z35- with an output of 1500 watt → Chapter

t  There are two versions of air duct housing -B- (with and without an opening for the heating element for additional heater -Z35-).
