1)  1 - The control unit version is always displayed on the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- during self-diagnosis.
2)  2 - The final control diagnosis is only possible up to an engine speed of 3000 rpm and below a vehicle speed of 5 km/h. The air conditioner compressor regulating valve -N280- is only actuated by the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- if the engine is not running. Request for actuation of the radiator fans (speeds 1 and 2) is always sent by the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- to the control unit for radiator fans -J293-. The control unit only actuates the fans if the engine is running (voltage present at terminal 61). → Electrical System; Repair Group 01 and → Relevant Workshop Manual, Injection and Ignition System; Repair group 01
3)  3 - The operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- is encoded in the Audi A2 by means of the dash panel insert and the convenience system central control unit -J393-. The data is transferred via the convenience data bus to operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-; the code which is currently valid is displayed in the measured value block → Chapter. There is no facility at present for direct code input into the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- (however, this feature may be introduced for optional extras at a later date). → Electrical System; Repair group 01
  Note
t  Self-diagnosis with the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- is described in this Workshop Manual.
t  Self-diagnosis can be performed similarly with the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552-. In order to be able to furnish proof of faults in the event of later queries, it is advisable to connect the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- or the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- before erasing the fault memory and to print out the faults present (the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- does not feature a printer).
t  If a new operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- has been installed and, following installation, no basic setting has been performed, the air conditioner compressor regulating valve -N280- is not actuated, and compressor shut-off condition “6” appears in the measured value block “2”.
t  The air conditioner control is not terminated on entering into self-diagnosis mode. However, it is deactivated if the following functions are selected:
t  - Final control diagnosis
t  - Performing basic setting
t  When the other functions are selected, the controls remain fully operative.
