Removing and installing gear knob and boot Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1275-

Gear knob

q	Remove and install together with boot

q	Removing → Fig.

2 -

Boot

q	Remove and install together with gear knob and boot ring → Fig.

q	Detaching from gear knob and assembling → Fig.

3 -

Boot ring

q	Removing and installing → Fig.

4 -	Connecting piece

q	Connects boot with gear knob

q	Removing → Fig.

Clip

q	Secures gear knob to gear lever

q	Secure on gear knob → Item using pliers -V.A.G 1275-

Removing gear knob and gear lever boot –  Lift gear lever boot -1- off centre console in direction of arrow. –  Pull boot up and over gear knob.

–  Open clip -arrow- and pull off gear knob together with boot. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order to removal; note the following: –  Renew the clip -arrow-.

Detaching boot ring from boot and assembling –  Release locking lugs -arrows A and B- and lift off boot ring -1- from inner ring -2-. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order to removal; note the following: –  Guide large locking lug on inner ring -arrow A- into large recess on boot ring -1-.

Detaching boot from gear knob and assembling –  Turn boot inside out. –  Using a screwdriver, lever the prongs -arrows- on the connecting piece outwards. –  Pull connecting piece off gear lever. –  Turn gear knob outwards and pull free of boot. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order to removal; note the following: –  Turn boot inside out. –  Insert gear knob in boot. –  Press connecting piece onto gear knob and boot. The connecting piece must clip onto the gear knob.
