Special tools and workshop equipment required

Removing
–  Remove bonnet → Chapter.
–  Take off engine cover panel -arrows-.
–  Remove noise insulation located below (detach crankcase breather hose).

Collect drained coolant in a clean container for re-use or disposal.
  WARNING
Hot steam or hot coolant can escape when expansion tank is opened; cover filler cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Open filler cap -arrow- on coolant expansion tank.

–  Remove noise insulation -arrows-.

–  Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- under engine.
–  Disconnect coolant hose (bottom) at radiator -arrow- and drain off coolant.

–  Remove bottom bolt -bottom arrow- for hose connection.

–  Pull oil dipstick out of guide tube.
–  Remove guide tube -1- for oil dipstick.
–  Pull oil filler pipe -2- off oil filler reservoir.

–  Remove top bolt -top arrow- for hose connection.
–  Turn thermostat clockwise through approx. 90° (1/4 turn) and remove thermostat from hose connection.
–  Remove O-ring.

Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

Renew O-ring.
–  Clean and smoothen sealing surface for O-ring as required.
–  Insert thermostat -3- with new O-ring -2- into hose connection -1-.
l  When inserting, the cross-piece on the thermostat should be horizontal as shown in the illustration.

–  Lubricate O-ring -2- with coolant additive “G12+”.
–  Turn thermostat anti-clockwise -arrow- through approx. 90° (1/4 turn).
–  Fill cooling system → Anchor.
