Raise vehicle.
–
Remove wheel.
–
Back off brake.
–
To do this, insert a screwdriver through a hole in the brake drum and push the wedge upwards.

Unscrew cross-head screw for brake drum and remove brake drum.
–
Tap gently on claw of hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2- to release dust cap from its seat.
–
Pry off dust cap.
–
Unscrew twelve-point nut.
–
Pull wheel bearing/hub unit off stub axle.
If the wheel bearing/hub unit cannot be pulled off by hand, proceed as follows.

Apply puller as shown in illustration.

Puller, e.g. -Kukko 20/2- (commercial type)

Pull wheel bearing/hub unit off stub axle.

Pull inner bearing race off stub axle.

Puller with leg clamp, e.g. -Kukko 204-2- (commercial type)
