Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1275-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Open-end spanner insert (32 mm) -V.A.G 1332/6-
t  Tool insert (22 mm) -V.A.G 1332/12-
t  Spring-type clip pliers -VAS 5024 A-

   
1 - Track rod ball joint (right-side)
q   Marked “C”
q   Pressing off → Chapter
2 - Lock nut, 50 Nm
q   Counterhold at flats on track rod ball joint when loosening and tightening
3 - Hose clip (spring-type)
q   Use spring-type clip pliers -VAS 5024 A- when installing
4 - Boot
q   Unscrew track rod ball joint before removing
q   Check for wear (slits, cracks); check sealing surfaces and sealing lips for dirt/damage
q   If renewed, check central position of steering box and adjust if necessary → Chapter
q   Must not be twisted when toe setting has been adjusted
5 - Hose clip
q   Renew - open with pincers
q   Tightening → Anchor
6 - Track rod
q   Tightening torque at rack: 80 Nm
q   Counterhold at flats on rack when loosening and tightening → Chapter.
q   If renewed, check central position of steering box and adjust if necessary → Chapter
7 - Sealing collar
8 - Seal
9 - Clamp
q   Secures steering box to subframe
q   Renew if thread is damaged
10 - Rubber insert
q   Steering box/subframe mounting
q   Note installation position: step in rubber part must point to the right
11 - Steering box
q   Servicing is restricted to replacement of track rods and rubber boots.
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Adjusting → Chapter
12 - Track rod ball joint (left-side)
q   Marked “D”
q   Pressing off → Chapter
