Encoding control unit

The control unit fitted in the vehicle is encoded. New control units supplied as replacement parts are not coded and are to be encoded following installation.

Encoding is only possible after entering workshop code (WSC) in V.A.G 1551.

  • ‒ Check control unit identification number.

Test sequence

  • ‒ Establish code on the basis of the following encoding table.
  • ‒ Connect up fault reader V.A.G 1551 and - with ignition switched on - select brake electronics control unit (address word 03).
 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer    HELP
Select function XX
  • ‒ Enter 07 for "Encoding control unit" function and confirm with Q key.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer    Q
07 - Encoding control unit
  • ‒ Confirm entry with Q key.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Encoding control unit
Enter code number    XXXXX    (0-32767)
  • ‒ Enter appropriate vehicle code number and confirm with Q key => V.A.G 1551 fault reader operating instructions.
 
→ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 displays control unit identification, e.g.:

Note:

If control unit is encoded with a code not appropriate to the vehicle model:

Code XXXXX    not accepted    ⇒

If 00000 is entered as control unit code, ABS warning lamp -K47 flashes and traction control system/ESP warning lamp -K86 is permanently lit.
