Safety precautions when working on airbag

◆ Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.

◆ Do not test with a test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter.

◆ The airbag system may only be checked with fault reader V.A.G 1551/1552 and when installed. An exception is the self-cancelling ring with slip ring.

◆ Always disconnect power supply when working on the airbag system.
Detach battery earthing strap/cable, cover over negative terminal. No waiting period is required after disconnecting the battery.

◆ There must be no-one in the vehicle when the battery is being connected.

◆ Airbag components must neither be opened nor repaired. Always use new components.

◆ The interval for replacing the airbag units no longer applies.

◆ Always observe the following sequence when replacing an airbag unit:
- 1 - Remove old airbag unit and place down with padding facing upwards; with head airbag observe procedure for head airbag
- 2 - Take new airbag unit from transport container and store with padding facing upwards; with head airbag observe procedure for head airbag => Page 69-56
- 3 - Immediately place old airbag unit into transport container.
- 4 - Install new airbag unit into vehicle.

◆ The airbag units should be installed immediately after removing them from their transport containers.

◆ If work is interrupted, the airbag unit should be replaced in its transport container.

◆ The airbag units must not be left unattended.

◆ Airbag units which have been removed must stored with the padding facing upwards with exception of head airbag => Page 69-56

◆ Airbag units which are dropped on a hard surface or are damaged must not be used.

◆ The airbag unit must not be treated with grease, cleaning agents or similar, and must not, even for a short time, be exposed to temperatures above 100 °C.

◆ Airbag units which were not triggered must be marked and be sent back to manufacturer for disposal (use transport containers for airbag units).
