Repairing driver's airbag
Removing and installing driver's airbag > MY 1998
  • ‒ Disconnect battery earthing strap/cable.

Important
Observe safety precautions for working on airbag
  • ‒ → Unscrew airbag unit from rear on left and right of steering wheel using Torx insert T30. Tightening torque 6 Nm.
  • ‒ Carefully fold back airbag unit.

  • ‒ Unplug airbag unit connector.
  • ‒ → Place airbag unit to one side with impact cushion facing upwards.
  • ‒ Ensure that the connectors engage fully (i.e. audibly).
Note:
Ensure there is no-one in the vehicle when connecting battery earth strap/cable.
  • ‒ Switch on ignition and connect battery earthing strap.

  • ◆ Remove steering wheel:
  • ‒ → Detach plug from coil connector.
  • ‒ Move steering to centre position (wheels in straight ahead position).
  • ‒ Unscrew bolt -1- and take off steering wheel. Tightening torque: 75 Nm.
    Always replace bolt -1-.
Note:
Ensure that coil connector is not twisted out of centre position.

Notes:

  • ◆ After connecting the battery, please ensure that the vehicle accessories (radio, clock, electric window lifters) are checked according to workshop manual and/or operating instructions.
  • ◆ If the fault warning light (K75) for airbag signals a fault after assembly the fault memory must be erased and again be interrogated by using fault reader V.A.G 1551.
