• ◆ Removing
• ‒ Disconnect battery/earthing strap/cable
• ‒ Remove seat for
  3-door vehicles up to 01.1999
• ‒ Remove outside fitting panels and outside seat side covers

• ‒ Remove connector -5-.
• ‒ Detach earth cable from contact 4 of connector -5- using force as appropriate.
• ‒ Unclip connector for side airbag -4- by pressing the lug at the plug terminal -6-.
• ‒ Disconnect the intermediate plug -8- for the backrest heating.
• ‒ Unclip clips -2- (3x).
• ‒ Cut through cable tie -3-.
• ‒ Disconnect cable for side airbag from outside of seat => Fig.1
• ‒ Remove side airbag unit

• ◆ Installing
• ‒ Clip plug -5- back into the old position and ensure that the bridge -7- is on top.
• ‒ Switch ignition on.
• ‒ Close doors.

• ‒ Connect battery earthing strap.

• Cable for side airbag
• Clips
• Cable tie
• Connector for side airbag
• Connector for sensor mat
• Plug terminal
• Bridge of connector
• Intermediate plug for backrest heater
• Sticker for airbag number

Routing cable with securing clip

• ‒ → Detach clip -2-.
• ‒ Remove bolt -4- (1x).
• ‒ Remove bracket -3-.
• ‒ Remove cover for backrest
• ‒ Unfasten clips -5- (1x).

Routing cable without securing clip

• ‒ → Unscrew bolt -4- (1x).
• ‒ Remove bracket -3-.
• ‒ Remove cover for backrest
• ‒ Unfasten clips -5- (1x).
• ‒ When installing, lay airbag cable over bore -2-.

Removing and installing side airbag unit

• ◆ Removing:

• ‒ → Remove screws -2- (2x).

Note:

Illustration section is shown without anti-squeak fleece for better illustration.

• ‒ Carefully unclip side airbag -1- at holding bracket -5-.
• ‒ Remove side airbag -1-.
• ‒ Put down airbag unit in such a way that padding faces upwards.

• ◆ Installing:

Note:

Do not cut the anti-squeak fleece -4- in area of holding bracket -5-.

• ‒ Drill fixing holes to 5.5 mm.
• ‒ Clip side airbag -1- in with anti-squeak fleece.
• ‒ Install bolts -2- lift up anti-squeak fleece -4- attach nuts and tighten with 5.5 Nm.
• ‒ Detach expiry date sticker from airbag unit and stick over the old sticker on the passenger door.
• ‒ Detach sticker for airbag number from the airbag unit and stick onto old sticker on the seat pan (=> Page 69-99, Item 9).

Notes:

• ◆ After connecting the battery, please ensure that the vehicle accessories (radio, clock, electric window lifters) are checked according to workshop manual and/or operating instructions.
• ◆ If the fault warning light (K 75) for airbag signals a fault after assembly the fault memory must be erased and again be interrogated by using fault reader V.A.G 1551.
