Renewing flange shaft oil seal (right-side) - separate oil seal and sleeve Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Drift -3106-

t  Cross piece -3253/2- from assembly tool -3253-

t  Drip tray, e.g. -VAS 6208- t  Sealing grease -G 052 128 A1- Removing –  Remove centre noise insulation (below engine/gearbox) → Rep. Gr.50. –  Turn steering to full right lock.

–  Remove protective cover for right inner constant velocity joint from engine -arrows-.

–  Unbolt drive shaft -1- from flange shaft. –  Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft. –  Place drip tray e.g. -VAS 6208- under the gearbox and engine. –  On vehicles with diesel engine, disconnect turbocharger oil return line from engine -arrow- → Rep. Gr.21.

–  Remove flange shaft securing bolt. To do this, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever. –  Pull out flange shaft and spring.

–  Lever out oil seal using a screwdriver -A- (support screwdriver on cross piece -3253/2-).   Note t  Do not damage sleeve, otherwise leaks will occur. t  Renew sleeve if damaged → Item

Installing –  Drive in new seal onto stop (take care to keep seal straight). –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-. –  Install flange shaft. –  Secure flange shaft with countersunk bolt.

–  Re-connect turbocharger oil return line to engine if necessary -arrow- → Rep. Gr.21. –  Bolt drive shaft -1- to flange shaft → Rep. Gr.40. –  Fit protective cover for right inner constant velocity joint to engine. –  Check gearbox oil → Chapter. –  Install centre noise insulation (below engine/gearbox) → Rep. Gr.50. Tightening torques
