Turn crankshaft at central bolt on crankshaft sprocket in direction of engine rotation to TDC mark.

At the same time the marking on the front of the camshaft sprocket must align with the marking on the cylinder head cover -arrows-.

Rotate crankshaft one turn further if necessary.
Note
Positioning crankshaft at “TDC” with engine removed → Chapter.

Screw stud M5x55 -item 1- into toothed belt tensioner.
–
Screw nut -3- with large washer -2- onto stud.
–
Carefully tension piston of tensioner until it is just possible to detach toothed belt from camshaft sprocket.
Note
Take care not to compress tensioner too far.

Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket.
Fitting (adjusting valve timing)
Caution
When turning the camshaft, the crankshaft must not be at “TDC”. Otherwise, there is a risk of damage to valves and piston crowns.

Check that marking on camshaft sprocket is aligned with marking on cylinder head cover -arrows-.
–
Check again whether the crankshaft is positioned at TDC -arrow-.

Fit toothed belt onto camshaft sprocket.
–
Release piston of toothed belt tensioner and unscrew stud -1-.
–
Turn crankshaft at central bolt on toothed belt sprocket two revolutions in direction of engine rotation and check whether camshaft and crankshaft markings align with their respective reference points.
