Checking function of variable valve timing   Note The variable valve timing is not activated until about 25 seconds after the engine has started. Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051-

Procedure l  Coolant temperature at least 80 °C. –  Connect up vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- with diagnosis lead -VAS 5051/1-, press vehicle self-diagnosis button and select vehicle system “01 - Engine electronics”. Engine must be idling.

Display on -VAS 5051 A-: –  From the selection menu -1- select diagnostic function “04 - Basic setting”.

Display on -VAS 5051-: 1 -  Enter display group –  Press keys 94 on keypad -2- to select “Display group 094” and confirm entry by pressing key Q. –  Increase engine speed to more than 1080 rpm.

Display on -VAS 5051-: –  Check display in display zones -2- and -3-.

3	…	Diagnosis of variable valve timing l  Test OFF l  Test ON l  Specification: Syst. OK If readout shows “Syst.n.OK”: check inlet camshaft control valve 1 -N205- → Chapter.
