Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387-
  W00-0037
t  Dial gauge -VAS 6079-
Procedure
–  Remove camshafts → Chapter.
  Note
Use waterproof felt-tip pen to mark original positions on back of bucket tappets to ensure that tappets are not interchanged.
–  Take bucket tappets out of guides and set them down with contact surface facing downwards.
–  Fit camshafts in cylinder head and install bearing caps at chain sprocket end and double bearing cap.

–  Secure universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387- with dial gauge -VAS 6079- to cylinder head:
Inlet camshaft
  A15-0119
Exhaust camshaft
–  Press relevant camshaft against dial gauge by hand.
–  Set dial gauge to “0”.
–  Push camshaft away from dial gauge and read off value.
Axial clearance for inlet and exhaust camshaft:
l  Wear limit: 0.20 mm.
